  9. Minutes of the Atlanta Services Location Working Group

  11. This meeting started with the discussion that has started many of these
  12. meetings, with a discussion of the solutions that exist in the area of
  13. services location protocols.  The examples, as previously given, are the
  14. XNS network binding protocol, AppleTalk's Name Binding Protocol and of
  15. course the TCP/IP Resource Location Protocol.

  17. Discussion lead to some of the problems in the propagation of request
  18. through IP based internets.  IP based internets do allow for the
  19. propagation of datagrams with the use of multicast groups but the
  20. topography of the IP internet does not necessarily match the propagation
  21. pattern of the requests which may be organizational or geographical in
  22. nature.

  24. The group decided to first concentrate on the local network case and
  25. then concentrate on the problem of extending the architecture to an
  26. arbitrary internet.

  28. In dealing with the local network situation the group came up with the
  29. following list of parameters that maybe of interest in the predicate
  30. portion of look ups:

  32.    o Name
  33.    o Service type
  34.    o Organization
  35.    o Geographic location
  36.    o Authentication
  37.    o Next protocol (the next protocol used in finding the service)
  38.    o Query originator
  39.    o Where is the service in relation to where am I (delta distance) the
  40.      predicate protocol to be used.

  42. John Veizades and Leo McLaughlin will be looking into all of this and
  43. posting something to the list by the next meeting.

  45. This group will also continue to work with Mike Schwartz and the IRTF
  46. group on resource location.
